How is Jesus our high priest?
Comprehending Jesus high priest verse
How is Jesus our high priest? This is a question that many believers often try to find an answer to and yet, aren’t sure of what it actually means. To comprehend the answer, it’s important to know what a high priest actually is. In the Jewish system, the high priest is accorded the highest stature as he’s considered the chief religious leader, who has to perform some specific duties. Among these were wearing the Urim and Thummin to help in determining God’s will in addition to overseeing the other priests. When the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) arrived, it was the high priest who stepped into the Most Holy Place but before he did, he had to make a sacrifice for himself. This was the way to cleanse himself, after which he was able to offer the cleansing sacrifices for the people (Leviticus 16:2).
The LORD said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron not to come whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die, because I appear in the cloud over the atonement cover. Leviticus 16:2
Several Jesus high priest illustrations indicate that God always intended to walk and reside amongst his people. But as humans were unable to ascend in their fallen state to a Holy God, He came to them as Jesus – a man made of flesh and blood. Jesus dwelled amongst the people – living, eating and drinking with them, sharing their tears, and finally, revealing Himself to the people. Just like the high priests of Old Testament times, Jesus acted as the bridge between God and the people. He finally made a one-time sacrifice, (Hebrews 10:1-18) to make the people righteous (2 Corinthians 5:21), who would be able to enter God’s presence. There are several Jesus high priest verses that would help one comprehend how Jesus is our high priest.
Jesus is a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek because His priestly qualifications are derived from Him belonging to the line of Melchizedek in terms of the priesthood.
